The directive that all policewomen have to wear the tudung (headscarf) during official functions has shocked Gerakan Youth.

In a statement today, its vice-chairperson S Paranjothy said the wing is surprised that Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohd Bakri Omar issued such a controversial directive.

According to him, the directive contravened religious rights and violated the constitution.

"The IGP should adhere to the constitution and the dress code approved by the relevant authorities," he said.

On Wednesday, Bakri reportedly said that all policewomen would have to wear the tudung for official functions with immediate effect.

He said the requirement was to ensure ' uniformity ' of police personnel at official functions.

According to an internal police circular exposed by DAP leader Fong Po Kuan yesterday, 'enhancing the image of the police' was the core reason for the move.

Paranjothy said headscarves should not be imposed on uniformed units in this country.

"Please be informed that the Royal Malaysian Police Force is a uniformed unit and it cannot be changed according to the whims and fancies of any individual," he said.

He said even if the policewomen were Muslims, they cannot be forced to wear a headscarf.

He said although Bakri said those who choose not to wear the tudung would not be subjected to disciplinary proceedings, the IGP could not guarantee that they would not be subjected to discrimination or intimidation by their superiors.

"There seems to be no originality in implementing or introducing something new where it will further enhance the police force rather than Islamising the police force," he added.
