CORONAVIRUS | Malaysia has recorded a three-digit increase in Covid-19 cases for the second day with 125 new infections, bringing the total to 553 cases, according to Health Minister Dr Adham Baba.

He said of these, 95 of the new cases could be traced to a tabligh gathering at Sri Petaling mosque which took place from Feb 27 to March 1.

Adham (above) also revealed that the remaining 30 cases were linked to previously identified clusters aside from the tabligh cluster.

The latest cases increased the number of patients linked to the tabligh cluster to 338, from a total figure of 7,000 participants screened so far.

Adham said the number of patients in the intensive care unit and requiring the aid of a ventilator to breath have also increased from nine to 12, three of whom are among the tabligh participants.

The Sri Petaling tabligh group, which was involved in organising a religious gathering that became a cluster of Covid-19 infections, yesterday appealed to all participants to cooperate with health authorities' call for them to come forward for health screenings and impose self-quarantine.

Adham, who spoke during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, meanwhile said Selangor has recorded the highest number of cases so far, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Johor.

When quizzed on calls for the government to impose a lockdown, he declined to comment beyond stating that an important announcement would be made by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin tonight.

"We should listen to the prime minister's announcement tonight.

"There will be an outline of what would happen," Adham said when pressed to describe possible circumstances in the event of a lockdown.

"We have to go seriously to tackle this outbreak. The prime minister together with the National Security Council will do something important for the country," he added.
