My 16-year-old (Muslim) niece sent me an e-mail today saying that she had watched 'The Da Vinci Code'. She found it exciting but also confusing in terms of the 'facts' the movie had presented versus what she had thought all along. My big questions to the Malaysian Censorship Board are:

  1. Why would you allow a movie that insults a Prophet to be shown in our predominantly Muslim country?

  • So, we ban movies that show images of a Prophet ('Passion of the Christ') but approve movies that insult the same Prophet?
  • How does a 16-year-old get into a movie restricted to18-year-olds?
  • If there are any Muslims on the board, I am afraid they have disobeyed the teachings of their religion. I have read the book and am now struggling with my conscience as a Muslim as to whether I should abide my religion and show respect to a Prophet or be 'logical' and watch the movie

If the purpose of the movie was to enlighten Malaysians, then why all the excitement when images of our Prophet were shown on TV ? Why not let our people 'be intelligent' and 'logical' and 'show reason'?

And if Hollywood makes a movie of the Prophet Nabi Muhammad cavorting with prostitutes and bearing children by them, would the Malaysian Censorship Board allow this movie to be shown in Malaysia?

'Saying you are a Muslim is one thing. Being one is the difficult part'.
