CORONAVIRUS | The Federal Territories Ministry has been urged to not just exempt businesses operating in Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) be exempted from paying monthly rent, but also to extend it to poor families living in People’s Housing Project (PPR) and Public Housing (PA).
Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil made the call through a posting on his Facebook this morning.
The PKR communications director said that the minister, Annuar Musa, should consider this as there are many urban poor living in PPR and PA who could benefit from this.
Fahmi pointed out that this is due to 50 percent of the 42,000 accounts renting at PPR and PA earn below RM1,000 a month.
“I believe that around 20,000 families definitely facing job and earning difficulties in during this Movement Control Order (MCO) period, and it is certain many among them, who conduct petty trading at the roadside, do odd jobs, care for other people’s children, and others, are affected financially.
“Therefore, DBKL should and can afford to give free monthly rent especially to families in PPR and PA who earn below the poverty line.
“It is estimated that this assistance would cost RM2.5 million or 0.08 percent of DBKL’s 2020 annual budget.
“I urge for this additional aid be expedited for the welfare of the urban poor,” Fahmi said.
Annuar was reported saying that businesses operating in DBKL premises will be exempted from paying rent for one month.
This is in light with the two-week movement control order being implemented by the federal government, which came into effect yesterday (March 18) to slow the spread of Covid-19 coronavirus.
Aside from the rent, Annuar, who is also Ketereh MP, announced that 500 daily-wage earners with DBKL will receive full pay even if they are unable to work throughout the 14-day order period.
