PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has been appointed as special envoy to the Middle East with ministerial rank.
"Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin agreed to appoint Hadi as special envoy to the Middle East with ministerial status," said Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement today.
Hadi was not appointed as minister in Muhyiddin's cabinet despite his position in the Islamic party.
Listing Hadi's credentials, the PMO noted that Hadi was the former International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) vice-president.
He was also the Terengganu menteri besar between 1999 and 2004.
In 2016, Hadi was listed as among the 500 most influential Muslims in the category of "Preachers and Spiritual Guides" by the Jordan-based Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre, said the PMO.
Hadi is also a nine-term Marang MP.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Hadi thanked Muhyiddin for the appointment.
“Insya-Allah (God willing) I will use some of my experience to help the Malaysian government to lead the agenda of unity and universal peace,” he said.
