CORONAVIRUS | Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has called on the government to define a clear exit strategy for Malaysia to confront the economic situation once the Covid-19 outbreak is under control and the movement control order (MCO) can be lifted.

"The past week has been encouraging for Malaysia with a steady decline of new Covid-19 cases.

"Hence, it is expected that the government starts considering allowing interstate travel so that people can return to work after the MCO is over," said the former Johor menteri besar in a statement today.

He, however, said that the government should not make this a priority to the extent that it shifts the focus away from other pressing concerns that have not been immediately addressed.

"First, there is an immediate need for a clear, actionable, and measurable ‘exit strategy’ to confront the current Malaysian economic situation.

"The government should deliberate and provide its plan on how to re-energise our economy. This can’t wait any longer.

"The more we stretch it, the more we would not be able to sustain our healthcare system and the welfare of the people," said Khaled.

He said that for a start, while the current MCO continues to be extended, certain economic and business activities should be allowed to operate.

"Work permission for workers in low-risk sectors should be seriously considered and not only the essential services.

"The German government's move to gradually allow operations of schools and stores up to 800 square metres is an example that the Malaysian government could emulate," he added.

Khaled called for businesses to reopen in phases, where restrictions may be loosened bit by bit while still upholding social distancing rules.

"Second, the government should consider lifting some restrictions for businesses and economic activities in the green zones with low risk in some states such as Penang, Terengganu, Sarawak and Perlis."

He said that this could work provided that these businesses are operated under strict adherence to physical distancing and personal hygiene.

"A clear strategy is needed as we can barely afford the risk of having another Covid-19 outbreak," he added.
