Shafie as PM can rebuild racial harmony in M'sia - Sarawak DAP
Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen believed that installing Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal as prime minister could help repair race relations in the country.

Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen believed that installing Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal as prime minister could help repair race relations in the country.
"Shafie has shown (himself) to be a leader who truly promotes religious freedom and racial harmony, unlike many of the West Malaysian politicians, especially those from Umno and PAS, who have the tendency to pander to racism and religion to gain political support," said Chong (above).
"With Shafie as the prime minister, it is the best chance for West Malaysia to rebuild the harmonious racial and inter-religious relationship of the past, which is still the hallmark of Sabah and Sarawak," he said in a statement.
He added that Shafie's installation will also improve relations between East and Peninsular Malaysia.
Umno and PAS' critics have accused the two parties of fanning racial sentiments after Pakatan Harapan took over Putrajaya in 2018. Harapan was later toppled in late February and is now attempting to stage a countercoup.
However, this has been hampered by disagreements over who should be prime minister, with PKR insisting that it be Anwar Ibrahim. In an attempt to break the deadlock, Dr Mahathir Mohamad had withdrawn himself from consideration and backed Shafie as premier instead.
While Harapan said the matter still needed to be discussed internally, DAP had so far been very supportive of the move. Yesterday Sabah DAP urged all East Malaysian MPs to back Shafie.
However, Sarawak deputy chief minister James Masing dismissed the gambit as Mahathir just playing politics.
In his statement, Chong said DAP could wait until the next general election for a change in government, but the country could not.
"We believe Malaysia cannot afford another month of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government’s destruction of the country’s systems," he said.
The PN government was accused of rolling back reforms made under Harapan, especially by appointing politicians to GLCs.
Looks like even Sarawak DAP also see no future with Anwar. DAP and Amanah must wake up now before it is too late ! Shafie as PM, Mukhriz as DPM, Anwar as Retiree !
