Opposition, PN lawmakers call for Jho Low to be arrested

PARLIAMENT | Lawmakers from both sides of the divide today called for fugitive businessperson Jho Low to be detained and brought to justice.

This follows the conviction of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak on seven charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering in the SRC International case.

Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin (Harapan-Hang Tuah Jaya) said Low (above) has evaded capture despite being the mastermind behind the 1MDB scandal.

"The former prime minister has (to face justice), but Jho Low hasn't. He is the number one mastermind, who has betrayed this country," he said.

Ahmad Maslan (BN-Pontian) then interjected saying others were also on the run.

"It's not just Jho Low. Others had also fled (the country), of various races... even Malays such as Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil for example and several others.

"All of them should be brought back to Malaysia, arrested, and make sure they speak the truth," he said.

Fahmi Fadzil (Harapan-Lembah Pantai) then added that the government should work together with China to extradite Low, who is now said to be hiding in Macau.

Low is a key figure in the 1MDB scandal, and was charged in absentia for money laundering involving a sum of US$1.03 billion in late 2018.

Najib's defence team had argued that the former prime minister had been conned by Low.

However, judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali ruled that this was a far-fetched claim.

Meanwhile, Nik Faisal is the former CEO of SRC International.

He had been named by witnesses in the trial as the person who had control of Najib's AmBank accounts, into which a sum of RM42 million was allegedly credited into.

According to the police, he is currently hiding in Hong Kong.
