Keadilan's new leadership, which will assume responsibility after today's party elections, must conduct a post-mortem to determine the party's strength and improve cooperation among its multi-racial and multi-religious members.

The call made by the party's Seremban branch, will be one of the resolutions presented and debated by delegates attending Keadilan's two-day Annual General Assembly in Kemaman, Terengganu.

Members also urged party leaders to review the unity of Barisan Alternatif, of which PAS, PRM and Keadilan are partners.

DAP recently left the three-year old coalition when it could not resolve the Islamic state controversy with PAS.

Altogether, 25 resolutions will be presented for debate at today's AGM - seven by Ipoh Timur branch, Ipoh Barat (3), Parit (1), Pasir Salak (6), Seremban (3), Parit Sulong (4) and Pekan (1).

Ethical code

Due to recent controversies which have rocked Keadilan, the party leadership was also urged to internalise the new political culture promised when launching Keadilan prior to the 1999 general elections.

The Pasir Salak branch which made the proposal also suggested that an ethical code for electing party members be applied for all elections in the supreme council, state and branch levels.

Keadilan's problems began when several key leaders decided not to defend their posts and this led many to speculate that the party was falling apart.

The first blow came when deputy president Dr Chandra Muzaffar said last month that he would not contest. Soon after this, vice-president Zainur Zakaria announced that he too will not defend his post.

The third blow came when supreme council member Hamdan Taha resigned from his post, citing factionalism problems within the party.

Leadership crisis

Recently media reports revealed that the party was plagued with a leadership crisis due to internal factionalism.

It is believed that party members were split between groups led by ex-Umno members and pro-Islamic groups led by the Muslim Youth Movement, Abim.

Intense campaigning by the Abim to ensure its members get elected to the top leadership positions led certain quarters to claim that the groups were out to 'Abimise' Keadilan and marginalise non-Muslims within the party.

Meanwhile, Keadilan's Ipoh Timur branch today called upon all parties not to politicise the Islamic state issue.

"Keadilan must continue to uphold the Federal Constitution, Barisan Alternatif's common manifesto and the party's new political agenda towards a just Malaysia," said the branch in its proposed resolutions.
