YOURSAY | Kudos to Uncle Kentang for helping the homeless family

YOURSAY | 'We are a nation of caring people, but not caring government.'

Ousted from rented home, family sleeps at R&R stop

Dr Raman: Kudos to the police patrol from Brickfields District police headquarters and philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, aka Uncle Kentang (above).

I don't think this is an isolated case. The government is announcing millions to help those in need affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Where does the money go?

Either it is not reaching those in need, or they just ignore those who cry for help. This family must have tried their best to get government assistance before they took this drastic step.

For the opposition, this is what you should harp on; not wear suits in Parliament and keeping shouting to bring the government down. How come your ground network didn't notice this family on the street?

It is just not sufficient to show sympathy and solve this family's plight. The government, opposition and the charities should reach out to many more such people before they are thrown out onto the streets.

Thanks to Malaysiakini for highlighting this issue.

Mohd Bakri 3: The police actually know who to call for assistance. Amazing. Only in Malaysia, eh?

It seems it is indeed #rakyatbanturakyat nowadays, with stories about this uncle and ustaz Ebit Lew, while our politicians continue to fight for their millions and billions.

Lionking: The rakyat are suffering but not the politicians, as some have three or more pensions and live in luxurious homes, and some with swimming pools.

The rakyat deserved this as we elected these people to office.

Cogito Ergo Sum: There is no money in the coffers. Irresponsible politicians stole it, got convicted and jailed, yet are still free. Some have got away scot-free.

So, it’s up to the rakyat again to bail out hard-hit members of the rakyat. People like Uncle Kentang step in when the government won’t, or can’t.

We are a nation of caring people, but not caring government.

Anonymous_15897060865429524: The fact that the police had to call Uncle Kentang, an ordinary independent citizen, rather than any one of the many taxpayer-funded government organisations is very telling.

RKR: Indeed, the police contact Kuan whenever such things happen. The last time it was a Malay woman with five kids abandoned by the husband living in her old car at a petrol station. She was eventually rescued by Kuan.

Where are the Aduns and MPs (elected representatives)? Busy quarrelling in Parliament? Where are the God's people from the God's party?

Pokokelapa: Yes, thanks to Kuan and the police for helping.

What is needed is to get to the bottom of this case. Why did this happen? If it is true that the situation is so bad, then something needs to be done.

They were on the street for five days and nobody took notice. It is truly not Malaysian.

Anonymous_3f4b: Kuan ran as an independent in the last election. However, voters prefer to vote for Pakatan Harapan/BN candidates in his constituency just because of some political hype and promised goodies.

Shovelnose: Regardless of his political inclination, Kuan is to be blessed for his work for the underprivileged.

Samm: Can we start a fund for this poor family and for so many of our people who are having such a hard time these days?

N Jules: Samm, you don't need to waste time suggesting a public fund-raising effort. Just start immediately among your family members and circles of friends.

Raise whatever you can and try to contact the family in distress, either via the police or Uncle Kentang.

Samm, I believe your intention is sincere. However, writing here is easy but it won't work. If you really want to help, start with your own self. It will require some effort but it's worth it.

I have done the same among my small group of friends. It's a great feeling being able to do our bit for the needy.

Bryan Perera: We manage a shelter in Kajang, officially referred to as Rumah Keluarga Kami (RKK), a home for abandoned, disadvantaged, marginalised and abused children and registered with the Department of Social Welfare.

We are willing to admit the children immediately, while their parents are given space to resolve their issues.

At RKK, the provision of education is our primary concern, whilst simultaneously, providing a holistic and conducive environment for the child to grow and develop his or her potential fully.

RKK can be reached at 603-8736 7877 and speak to Madam Nilani. "To save a child" is our guiding principle at RKK.

Kamapo: @Bryan Perera, may God bless you and all others in your humane efforts to help the needy.

Headhunter: What happened to Malaysia, a once prosperous country envied by neighbours and highly respected internationally?

We are now gaining a reputation for being a nation with deep-seated racial prejudice, institutionalised corruption and a safe haven for terrorists.

LimeHorse5802: When every time such sad stories surfaced, one would wonder where are politicians and national/state welfare units?

Instead, the police called an independent philanthropist for help. Or is it another indicator of a failed state that no longer cares for the poor and unfortunate?
