Najib, go tell Khairy to behave himself

It is matter for regret that the DPM felt it appropriate sermonising the other BN components instead of directing Khairy to withdraw his racial remarks, says a reader.

On Najib: Invoke BN spirit to solve problems

KSN : It is matter for regret that DPM felt it appropriate sermonising the other BN components instead of directing Khairy to withdraw his racial remarks about the Chinese taking advantage and apologise, and stop making racial statements in the future. Khairy did not stop with that. He says he made the statement to defend the race and religion. What has religion to do with this matter?

Being the "dominant" member of BN, it is incumbent on Umno to conduct itself with dignity and make statements that inspire confidence in other races and parties, and implement policies that are fair to every citizen in this country. So dear DPM, please address your advice to Khairy and Umno.

Ah Chong: The racial formula is coming back to bite the BN government. It is all unraveling quickly. Why should a public body like the Penang Water Authority be handed to any political party?

The race-based formula of the ruling Barisan Nasional does only one thing and that is to cause each component party to fight for the rights and privileges of their own community. To win the votes of their own community, they need to claim as much of the limited economic pie as possible for their community. It segregates the different races further. It does not work anymore. I prefer to look at the Keadilan formula in the post-Merdeka generation.

Peter Ooi: According to Umno Bukit Mertajam division chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir, PWA was not helping the Malays and this was reflected in the racial composition of its high ranking officials, where out of 15, only three were Malays. Musa, you should be ashamed to come up with this statement.

When other departments are staffed by almost 100% Malays, there wasn't any complain from any Umno members. Just take a look at the Education Department, Custom Department or Immigration. There are hardly any Chinese or Indian officers to be seen.

And why do you, Musa, look at the splinter which is in others' eyes, but the beam in your own eye, you do not consider?

Ramesh: As a trade-off, I am even willing to accept Dr Mahathir as the prime minister if it means that this arrogant and not-so-smart upstart is out of politics. This guy is turning out to be the biggest threat to the stability of this country.

Sadirah K: No ethnically-based political party in Malaysia can take the moral high ground when it comes to statements made at their party meetings. All of them play to the gallery - their own ethnic ghettoes.

So long as we remain at this level, it is going to be so. As someone once said, "The problems of today cannot be solved at the same level of thinking that created them." Whether you are a graduate of Universiti Malaya or Oxford, when you join a racially-based party you can only survive by playing racial politics.

The sad reality of Malaysia is that after nearly five decades of racial politics we have not progressed. We will continue to add greater stench to the racial politics that we witness today. Leadership with a vision is lacking. No one wants to think out of the box and create new structures and systems that respond to the needs of today.

The cake is big enough and everyone will have to sacrifice to be a Malaysian for being one means the need to transcend prevailing ethnic loyalties in the best interest of all Malaysians. We wish for this but are instead caught within the age-old structures that demean all of us collectively.

On Let royal commission probe judicial crisis

PTTan: I would suggest that the inquiry will do Malaysia no good except to open a Pandora's box. The way forward is to change the way judges are selected and retained, like the US Supreme Court where the selection process is subjected to hearings and then the post is confirmed until retirement ie, no sackings allowed. That way the nation's highest court will not be beholden to anyone except to the constitution.

On PM orders probe into Petronas expulsion from Chad

Kee Ster: First of all, can anyone, or perhaps the prime minister himself, care to explain what does he meant "it's their company" in reference to Petronas' expulsion from Chad? I thought Petronas belongs to the government. So, what is this, to paraphrase "it's their company"? Is this another typical bureaucratic rhetoric, "Not my problem, it belong to another department"? In other words, blame others but not oneself?

Now coming to Khairy, regarding his recent statement about protecting the dignity of religion and ethnic integrity, could someone at least ask him to elaborate? What does he mean by upholding and protecting one's religious and ethnic integrity? I, as a non-Malay Malaysian, would like for you to move ahead so that sometime in the future you would stop using racial disadvantages as an excuse that meanwhile only benefitted an elite class amongst yourself.

On Push for first gender equality bill

Kean Jin Lim: I would like to suggest Malaysia learn from Finland. Finland is the first European country applying gender equality laws. Since our Pak Lah will visit Finland next week for the EU meeting, it is a good chance for Malaysians to find out more about this.
