Parliament will reconvene before the emergency period expires on Aug 1, de facto law minister Takiyuddin Hassan announced today.

He said more details would be made available after next week’s cabinet meeting.

"The prime minister (Muhyiddin Yassin), as the head of Parliament, has decided to call for a Parliament sitting as soon as possible, before Aug 1, 2021.

"This will be finalised during the July 7 cabinet meeting," he added in a statement.

Takiyuddin said that Putrajaya honoured the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decrees about parliamentary sittings.

Parliament has been suspended since Jan 11, when the emergency was proclaimed.

According to Attorney-General Idrus Harun, the cabinet's role is to advise the Agong on when His Majesty can convene Parliament.

Putrajaya succumbs to pressure

This announcement comes as Muhyiddin faces growing pressure to bring forward his original timeline to open Parliament in September or October.

The Agong has twice decreed for the august houses to sit "as soon as possible" to allow the emergency proclamation and its ordinances to be debated.

Similar calls have been made by the speakers of both the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara, government and opposition political parties, civil society organisations and members of the public.

Legal experts previously told Malaysiakini that it would be pointless for Parliament to debate the emergency proclamation and ordinances after both expire on Aug 1.
