Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has advised Port Klang assemblyperson Zakaria Md Deros to resign as Klang municipal councillor to put an end to several controversies.

This was made known at a press conference held by the sultan's private secretary, Mohd Munir Bani, soon after Zakaria had an audience with the sultan at Istana Kayangan in Klang today.

Munir said the sultan had received a lot of complaints on Zakaria less exemplary behaviour from various parties such as being rude and hurting the people's feelings by abusing his powers.

"As a Malay, he should be polite and courteous," read the sultan's statement, according to Bernama .

Zakaria was summoned by the sultan today to explain, among others, allegations of building a four-storey mansion without approval from the authorities and having two relatives in the Klang Municipal Council (MPK).

He reportedly apologised for all such wrongdoings.

Deadline set

He was summoned by the sultan on Monday, but deferred the audience until today due to illnesses. He was however spotted at his beachfront chalet in Malacca during Aidilfitri celebrations.

Zakaria today apologised to the sultan over the incident, and claimed he was suffering from high blood pressure and could not talk clearly, said Munir.

Meanwhile, Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo said Zakaria had until Nov 8 to resign, failing which the state government will invoke laws to give him the boot.

"I hope he resigns on his own accord before the state government makes a decision,

"If Zakaria quits, it shows he is a responsible person upon his realisation for his mistakes. By doing so, he can protect his image and that of his family," said Khir according to Bernama in a separate report.
