Sarawak DAP has urged their PKR counterparts to focus on winning as many of the 47 seats they had been allocated as possible, instead of tussling for even more seats to contest in.

Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen (above) reminded them that the goal of the election is to defeat Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

"Don’t waste valuable time and energy grabbing seats but losing the general goal to win the war against GPS," he said in a statement today.

PKR is pushing to get more seats to contest in the upcoming state polls.

Sarawak Pakatan Harapan came to an agreement on seat allocations earlier this January - to avoid clashing as they did in 2016.

However, Sarawak PKR said the deal is now void as the state party chief who signed the deal, Larry Sng, has since quit.

Chong rubbished this assertion, saying that negotiations were not just between DAP and Sng and that several Sarawak PKR committee members played an active role in the negotiations.

"Just because Sng has subsequently left PKR, doesn’t mean that the whole state committee’s previous decision is null and void and has to be revisited.

"Agreements don’t work that way. It is an agreement entered into between party to party, the change of one office bearer does not affect the validity of the agreement," he said.

He added that Sarawak DAP had given up some seats as well in order to reach the agreement with PKR.

Previously, a 2016 disagreement over seat allocations led to PKR and DAP clashing in six seats.
