The government should show its anti-corruption commitment by tabling a motion to adopt the Public Account's Committee's (PAC) findings into Bank Negara's purchase of government land in 2017, whose proceeds were later used to bail out 1MDB, says Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang.
Lim noted that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said Malaysia was committed to the United Nations Convention against Corruption and has undertaken several efforts to prove its seriousness.
"To walk the talk, I call on Wan Junaidi to introduce a motion in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday to adopt the Public Accounts Committee report confirming the suspicion that Bank Negara funds were used for 1MDB bailout," Lim said in a statement.
Wan Junaidi had said the government's commitment to anti-corruption could be seen through Putrajaya's efforts to seize assets related to the 1MDB scandal amounting to RM5 billion as well as the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Plan 2019-2023.
The PAC, which on Monday tabled its report on the land purchase, found that Bank Negara had purchased it for RM2.07 billion even though the Valuation and Property Services Department had put the value at RM1.422 billion.
"Proceeds from the sale were used for payment under the 1MDB rationalisation plan on Dec 31, 2017," PAC chairperson Wong Kah Woh had said.
Najib Abdul Razak, who was the prime minister in 2017 and is now facing various criminal charges related to 1MDB, had lashed out at the PAC finding, claiming that it was a DAP agenda.
However, Wong refuted Najib's claim, pointing out only two out of 14 PAC members are from DAP. Wong is also DAP's Ipoh Timur MP.
