The flood disaster that struck the country over the weekend should not be politicised and aid should be channelled to everyone affected regardless of their backgrounds, said former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The Langkawi MP also expressed his appreciation to Malaysians who had come together to help those affected by the floods.
“Helping those in need is one of the main pillars of our party’s (Pejuang) fight.
“This is not the time to play politics, this is the time for humanity; help should be given without being selective.
“Aside from that, I would also like to request for Pejuang members who are giving aid to always maintain discipline, don’t be arrogant and carry out this responsibility with courtesy and patience,” Mahathir said in an address to Pejuang members.
Mahathir is currently receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute.
Parts of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor faced major flash floods over the weekend due to continuous rainfall for two days.
Several other states also suffered from floods including Pahang, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Malacca.
It was reported earlier today that the death toll from the floods nationwide had reached 14 so far, while rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing.
Mahathir expressed his worry for those affected by the natural disaster.
“I have been following the news about the floods that have struck our country. It is very worrying and the suffering the victims have to face must be very painful.
“It is the same with the efforts by the Malaysian people at all levels who have worked together to help the victims,” he said.
The 96-year-old also conveyed his gratitude for those who have prayed for his health.
