Education ministrys help sought on Chinese school shortage

The Chinese School Committees Association of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur will appeal to the education minister to address the problem of Chinese school shortage in Subang Jaya and USJ, Selangor.

Association secretary Tan Leong Choong said they intend to hand over a memorandum though they have yet to confirm the date of appointment with the ministry.

However, Tan is confident the meeting is likely to be tomorrow or the day after.

Yesterday, a similar memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was handed over to his private secretary Baharuddin Tahir at the Prime Minister's Department by the association's working committee on SJKC Subang Jaya/USJ development.

The committee urged the government to convert the nearly completed vision school in USJ into a Chinese primary school and to speed up the construction of the school building for SJKC Chee Wen which has been sharing classrooms with SK SS17 in Subang Jaya since 1999.

Disappointed with delay

"We do not know why construction work for SJKC Chee Wen has not started and we are very disappointed with the delay," said Tan.

He added that the committee has gathered about 16,000 signatures in the campaign for the conversion of the USJ vision school.

However, the Prime Minister's Department has yet to revert on the memorandum, Tan revealed.

The association said for this year, about 800 students could not register in Chinese schools in the area while at least 4,000 other students are attending schools in Puchong, Sungai Way, Subang New Village and Kota Kemuning.

There are some 160,000 residents in USJ, of whom about 100,000 are Chinese.

There are two Chinese schools in Subang Jaya and none in USJ.
