JOHOR POLLS | Former BN Layang Layang assemblyperson Abd Mutalip Abd Rahim, who is being fielded to contest the seat again in this election after being sidelined in 2018, vowed to win and continue where he had left off.

Speaking to reporters after being nominated as a candidate this morning, he also called for voters to choose BN instead of Pakatan Harapan, which he said had not fulfilled their promises after winning the 14th general election.

"I want to continue what I had been doing (as an assemblyperson), to improve Layang Layang's development, infrastructure and education, among others," he said at a press conference held at Simpang Renggam Municipal Council's Dewan Muafakat, which was used as a nomination centre for the state seat.

Earlier, Abd Mutalip was officially announced as a candidate contesting the Layang Layang seat in four-cornered fights against three others, namely Maszlee Malik (PKR), Alagathiran Krishnan (Perikatan Nasional), and Ahmad Shafiq Othaman (Pejuang).

Abd Mutalip became Layang Layang assemblyperson after winning the seat in 2013 but was dropped from contesting the seat in the 2018 general election.

He was replaced by Onn Hafiz Ghazi who went on to win it with a slim majority of 364 against PKR's M Murugan and PAS' Mohd Jubri Selamat.

For this election, BN decided to move Onn Hafiz to the Machap state seat instead.

Asked to comment on this, Abd Mutalip said it was normal in politics that candidates are dropped or moved around.

"Even when I ceased to be an assemblyperson, I continued to serve the rakyat as they still came to see me for assistance," he said.

Winning chance

On his chance to win against Maszlee, who is the incumbent Simpang Renggam MP, Abd Mutalip said he leaves it to God's will and the power of voters to decide.

Maszlee, who has also been touted as PKR menteri besar candidate, listed his four aspirations for Johor.

They include creating more job opportunities for youths in the state and solving the housing issue for the group.

"Thirdly, we also need to create an ecosystem, to ensure that Johor can provide skilled and competent human resources, and one of the important aspects is English language competency.

"We will focus on making Johor youths have good English proficiency so that the state can attract international industry players to invest here," he said.

PN's Alagathiran, who is from Bersatu, also expressed a similar aspiration to create more jobs and housing while Pejuang's Ahmad Shafiq promised that he will do his best for Layang Layang.
