The custodial death on March 5 involving a 48-year old Indonesian man had no criminal element, according to Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Azri Ahmad.
In a statement, Azri said the man had died due to coronary artery disease.
“A post-mortem was conducted in the Kuching general hospital on March 8 where it found no injuries or criminal element (on the deceased).
“The cause of death was coronary artery disease and has been classified as sudden death
“However, the Criminal Investigation Unit on Deaths in Custody under JIPS will continue investigations from every angle before handing over our findings to the coroner,” he said in a statement.
The deceased was temporarily detained at the Bintulu district police headquarters for a drug and immigration-related offence.
Free Malaysia Today reported that the man complained of breathing difficulties and was sent for further treatment at the Bintulu general hospital, where he passed.
The last reported custodial death was on Feb 26, involving a Myanmar national who died in Kelantan, allegedly due to Covid-19.
He was detained at the Jaram Perdah police station in Pasir Mas for immigration-related offences.
