Putrajaya has been urged to amend the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) following repeated reports that personal data held by commercial or government entities have been compromised.
In a statement today, PKR communications director and Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil estimated that 100 million individual personal records have been compromised over the past five years based on known leaks.
Fahmi, citing eight such incidents including the infamous "telco leak" in 2017 and the latest "Pikas leak", said there was only one data theft case brought to court so far.
He was referring to Malindo Air being charged in 2020 for allegedly violating the PDPA.
However, Fahmi (above) said the public has not been informed of the developments in other investigations.
"This situation is not good for the public nor the economy. What happened to all the stolen data? Why is it so rampant?" he asked.
He said the previous Pakatan Harapan federal administration was working on amendments to the PDPA but could not complete its work due to the change of government in February 2020.
In view of this, Fahmi urged Putrajaya to reveal whether the current government is pursuing a review of the law to ensure the protection of personal data.
"The Communications and Multimedia Ministry should use the next parliamentary sitting on July 18 to table the amendments.
"God willing, I will table a private member's bill to similar effect as well," he said.
