Vijay47: History is replete with tales of men who repented, Mohamad Khir Toyo. But your contrition is of a strange nature - whoever has heard of remorse that led to a realisation that “wastage of public funds” is unacceptable?

The lesson is more profound, more inward-looking, about the excesses and evil life one has lived and that the way forward is to avoid such pitfalls. But “wastage of public funds”?

Yet while I must accept that there could be sincerity in your wish to reform, the laments notwithstanding, it does evoke several questions.

The man who is truly sorry would want to avoid those occasions of sin that set him astray - the company and realm that placed him in the cesspool of evil, to begin with.

So why return to Umno and politics? Have they not damned your soul enough? Would a repentant Adam and Eve go back to the Garden and frolic with the devil?

And speaking of the Garden, stop this convenient, spineless excuse of blaming God. “It was God’s will”? No, God gave you and me and our neighbour free will and conscience to decide between right and wrong. If we walk the wrong path, the sin lies fully on us, not with God.

You now piously claim that doing time did you good. Would you then preach that those judged to be wrong should similarly languish in prison rather than prance about as examples of righteousness?

You were released in 2016 and strangely today, about five years later when the period of ineligibility for Parliament ends, you suddenly find fervour to save mankind through politics. Why not continue the way you did these last six years?

Man has unique ways to demonstrate repentance and regret. No, I am not suggesting you emulate Judas.

MS: Indeed. If it takes jail to realise that wastage of public funds is unacceptable, almost every public servant of the ‘ketuanan’ variety and his manipulating politician should serve time.

Anyway, by his admission, I gather that there is nothing in his good book which forbids such wastage, just as it obviously says nothing about indulging in corrupt acts.

Leaving that aside, it is apparent that Khir Toyo has been putting up with an annoying six-year itch for the life of wanton excess he once had. Which explains his desire for a soothing balm in Sungai Besar.

You served six months out of 12 for corruption, and feeling remorse?

Gift yourself a broom (remember that Khir Toyo?) and sweep the streets of Shah Alam every day for the next six months if you really feel contrite.

People may forgive you then and use you as an example to teach their children the difference between right and wrong.

Umno is smart enough to realise their folly but not smart enough or not willing to establish the real reason for their loss and eliminate it.

Vent: Khir Toyo, if you are milking for sympathy you are not getting one drop from me and judging from the comments here in Malaysiakini, from virtually no one.

You don't get it, do you? You were found guilty of corruption. You were jailed. You are a convicted criminal on record. And you are now hoping to represent the same people whose trust you betrayed?

You’re politically toasted. You have been burnt to a crisp. No one eats burnt toast. Get it?

Koel: What part of the "get rid of corrupt leaders" message does Umno not get? Or is that their best virtue?

Stop using the country to enrich yourself. Stop divisive racial and religious rhetoric and get rid of discriminatory policies.

Live modest lives and work for all people and for the country. Do you have the courage to do that? Otherwise, get out of politics and leave us alone.

Kuniyo: Khir Toyo should advise Najib to serve his jail sentence, just like he did.

At least, Khir Toyo was jailed for corruption, while Najib had never spent a day in jail after being convicted more than a year ago. Not only that, Najib continues to enjoy all kinds of VIP treatment.

BlackJaguar6029: Khir Toyo, no politician should be trusted the second time with power and public funds again once they have been convicted. You may try your luck elsewhere in another profession.

Imagine our country's greatest kleptocrats claim they have repented one fine day and they want to be PM again. Unthinkable!

In the corporate sector, once you have been sacked for wrongdoing, will you get a chance to come back?

Just A Malaysian: By Khir Toyo’s reasoning, we should only elect ex-convicts to positions of power since they have learned lessons not to be “wasteful” with public funds.

Malaysians are poor in recycling waste and rubbish, but excellent in recycling has-been or convicted politicians.
