The Pakatan Harapan presidential council has challenged the government to fully announce a plan to address the issues of subsidies and the rising cost of living within the next 24 hours.
Otherwise, they said, the relevant ministers must resign from their positions.
“Harapan will also take several actions including mass mobilisation with civil societies and any other parties who would like to stand together with us to express the rakyat’s anger,” the presidential council said in a statement today.
The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.
The leaders said they are highly concerned about the latest developments regarding the rising cost of living, following the announcement yesterday that the subsidies and ceiling price for palm cooking oil, chicken and eggs will be removed starting July 1.
This will further add to the burden of the rakyat, who already have to face an economy badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, they said.
‘Not a responsible act’
Meanwhile, Harapan pointed out that the government has yet to announce any mechanism or timeline for the implementation of targeted subsidies even though there is less than a week before the ceiling price is removed.
This does not give the rakyat much time to prepare for the sharp rise in their cost of living, the opposition bloc said.
“This is neither a proactive nor a responsible act. The opposition leader has said many times in Parliament about how the National Action Committee on the Cost of Living (Naccol) meetings and actions last year were late.
“Unfortunately, the rakyat continues to witness how slow the various ministers are in handling the cost of living problem,” the Harapan presidential council said.
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi had yesterday announced that the ceiling price for chicken and chicken eggs, and the subsidies for palm cooking oil, will not be continued from July 1.
He said this is to ensure the food supply will be more stable and that food prices will stabilise in the long run.
