PAS MUKTAMAR | Despite denials from Umno's top brass, PAS insists that there are ongoing talks with other leaders in the ruling Malay party.

PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan (above) said while the Umno leaders they are engaged with can't make decisions on behalf of Umno, they do have enough influence to bring negotiations to an official level.

"We have negotiations going on at certain levels, which we need not reveal. But I can confirm that there are official and unofficial talks," he told reporters after the close of the 68th PAS muktamar in Alor Setar, Kedah today.

Takiyuddin said this when asked to respond to Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan denying that there were ongoing negotiations with PAS.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has hinted that talks also did not involve his Umno counterpart, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Umno and PAS once had an alliance dubbed Muafakat Nasional. However, this collapsed after PAS joined Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional.

PAS has since tried repeatedly to be a bridge between Umno and Bersatu, an agenda that was a key topic during the muktamar.

Takiyuddin said he was optimistic that negotiations with Umno will become official eventually.
