Terengganu Sultanah Nur Zahirah will know on Oct 31 whether she succeeds in her defamation civil action against Sarawak Report founder Clare Rewcastle-Brown.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court this afternoon set the decision date for the plaintiff’s lawsuit against the defendant’s statement in the latter’s book 'The Sarawak Report - The Inside Story of 1MDB'.

Judicial commissioner John Lee Kien How @ Mohammad Johan Lee fixed the verdict for 4pm on that date after hearing oral submissions from both legal teams.

Today was set for oral submissions, following the full trial at the civil court that saw five witnesses in total take the stand.

The sultanah previously denied being involved in the Terengganu Investment Authority (TIA), the predecessor to sovereign wealth fund 1MDB, when she testified on Aug 1.

On Aug 4, Rewcastle-Brown testified that it was an honest mistake on her part in relation to the alleged defamatory portion in her book.

The book’s later editions removed the purportedly defamatory portion.

On Nov 21, 2018, the sultanah filed the civil action which named not only Rewcastle-Brown but Gerakbudaya Enterprise publisher Chong Ton Sin and printing company Vinlin Press Sdn Bhd as well.

Sultanah Nur Zahirah alleged that Rewcastle-Brown used defamatory statements in the book, which Vinlin Press printed in August 2018.

The plaintiff claimed she was not involved in either the administration or the setting up of TIA and alleged that the statements caused her embarrassment and tarnished her reputation.

She is seeking RM100 million in damages and wants the second defendant Chong to withdraw the books containing the defamatory statements, as well as stop the third defendant Vinlin Press from printing more copies of the book.

In their statement of defence, the three defendants denied they had ever accused Sultanah Nur Zahirah of having been involved in corruption.
