Having three DPMs will herald a 'new Malaysia' - Ongkili

Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will propose that the Special Council on Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MKMA63) make deputy prime ministers from Sabah and Sarawak their top agenda.

PBS president Maximus Ongkili said his party fully endorsed the idea because it would be consistent with the constitutional provisions which stated that Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia are equal partners.

"It would represent the new Malaysia. It could be a major leap forward for the country, and I am confident it would be unanimously agreed by MKMA63," he said in a statement.

Ongkili (above) is the incumbent president of the MKMA63 - a body formed on Sept 16, 2020, by Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration to resolve outstanding issues between Putrajaya and East Malaysia.

The MKMA63 already discussed the possibility of appointing a deputy prime minister from Sabah and Sarawak, said Ongkili.

"In fact, the Equal Partner Working Committee is looking at the subject matter on the equal status of both Sabah and Sarawak in the Constitution," he added.

Leaders from both BN and Pakatan Harapan have indicated that their coalitions will pledge guarantees to appoint a deputy prime minister from Sabah and Sarawak.

No one from Sabah or Sarawak has ever held the position before.
