A video clip showing an individual damaging Deepavali kolam decoration at a private hospital started making its rounds on social media today and irked many netizens, who criticised the man's action as being disrespectful.

The incident prompted police to launch an investigation under the Penal Code for the insult against religion, which is punishable with a jail sentence of not less than two years.

In the 39-second video clip on TikTok, a man clad in a baju Melayu was shown walking on the decoration and using the tip of his shoes to damage it.

It had caught the attention of many netizens who lambasted the man, including one man who appeared on a TikTok video demanding the perpetrator make a public apology.

"If you fail to upload an apology video, we will find you," said the netizen.

Klang Utara district police chief S Vijaya Rao, in a statement earlier today, said police have received a report on the incident and the case has been classified under Section 298A of the Penal Code.

The law stipulates punishment for the offence of causing disharmony by insulting religion, which carries a jail sentence of a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years.

"The suspect will be called to give his statement at Klang Utara district police headquarters," the police officer said.

Meanwhile, KPJ Healthcare in a statement said they were aware of the video and investigating claims that the incident involved one of its staff.

"KPJ Healthcare does not condone any act of disrespect among its staff and within the compound of any of its hospitals.

"We have launched an internal investigation into the video and stern actions will be taken should our staff is involved.

"KPJ Healthcare is committed to the highest level of professionalism and we do not compromise on ethical values," the company said.
