Group calls for DAP to field Indian candidate in Teluk Intan

Unhappy over the continued candidacy of Nga Kor Ming in Teluk Intan, a small group of DAP members and supporters held a protest calling for the party to field a candidate of Indian descent.

The group was led by party member Annamalay Subrayan from the Taman Desa Bakti branch who claimed to have joined the party more than 10 years ago.

"It's been a traditional practice for DAP to field an Indian candidate for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat.

"This is because Teluk Intan has a high percentage of Indians," he told Malaysiakini.

According to Election Commission data, Teluk Intan has 18.3 percent of Indian voters as of April.

However, Annamalay's claims were inaccurate as Nga is being fielded for the second time and prior to him, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud was fielded in a by-election in 2014 to replace the deceased Seah Leong Peng who had won in 2013.

DAP last fielded an Indian candidate for Teluk Intan in 2008 with M Manogaran winning the seat.

Malaysiakini has contacted Nga for his view but has yet to receive a reply.

Perak DAP previously announced its candidates for Teluk Intan and two state seats underneath it - Pasir Bedamar and Changkat Jong.

While Nga is set to defend Teluk Intan, both state seats will be contested by fresh faces - Woo Koh Leong (Pasir Bedamar) and Badrul Hisham Badarudin (Changkat Jong).

Woo is replacing the incumbent assemblyperson Terence Naidu while Changkat Jong is a new seat allocated to DAP.
