Caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob reaffirmed that he is the only candidate for prime minister from BN, amid attempts from their opponents to paint Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the coalition’s next prime minister.

He said BN’s enemies are using this tactic to try to confuse the voters even though they know he is the only prime ministerial candidate announced by Umno/BN.

They are also playing up this issue in an attempt to cause a split among Umno/BN leadership, he said.

“That’s why they’re trying to confuse (voters). They definitely want BN and Umno leaders to be divided.

“But BN’s decision to nominate me as prospective prime minister was made by the Umno supreme council, the political bureau and the annual general assembly. In fact, it was welcomed by the (BN) component parties.

“The entire BN leadership, including our chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, (deputy chairperson) Mohamad Hasan, and the others have clearly stated that I am (BN’s) one and only prime minister candidate,” Ismail Sabri said as reported by Free Malaysia Today.

Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have both previously tried to push the narrative that Zahid is eyeing the prime ministership despite Ismail Sabri having been announced as BN’s candidate for the position.

Several of BN’s opponents have also claimed that a vote for BN would be a vote for Zahid to become prime minister.

However, Zahid has consistently denied the allegations.
