Sabah CM Hajiji to reshuffle cabinet amid coup speculation

Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor will reshuffle his cabinet, following yesterday’s failed attempt to overthrow him.

“He said details will be disclosed soon,” his office said in a brief statement issued today.

The statement neither mentions when the new cabinet line-up will be announced nor the reason for the reshuffle.

However, the announcement came amid speculation of a bid by Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal to overthrow him.

The speculation intensified yesterday when Warisan announced that Shafie would hold a press conference, with expectations running high that he would reveal the number of assemblypersons backing him.

However, after a two-hour wait, journalists were informed that the press conference had been cancelled.

Hajiji (above), meanwhile, met representatives from GRS, BN, and Pakatan Harapan yesterday, though he downplayed the purpose of the meetings and said it was to discuss plans to develop Sabah in 2023.

Earlier today, Free Malaysia Today quoted unnamed sources claiming that Hajiji is expected to axe Umno Sabah chief, Bung Mokhtar Radin from his deputy chief minister post, along with Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Jafry Ariffin.

However, the report said not all BN leaders will be removed, and Hajiji may bring Pakatan Harapan Sabah assemblypersons into his cabinet.

Shafie is expected to mount a ‘do or die’ bid to oust Hajiji by Jan 10, sources told Malaysiakini, where a special state assembly sitting could bolster the latter’s position.
