Nurul Izzah no longer PM's senior adviser, accepts new role

PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar today announced she will no longer be serving as senior economics and finance adviser to her father, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Nurul Izzah, in a statement, said this is after she accepted an invitation to co-head a secretariat that was formed to support an advisory committee to Anwar, in his role as finance minister.

“The committee chairperson Mohd Hassan Marican has invited me to join the secretariat and assist their efforts to strengthen the country’s and people’s economy. I humbly accept this responsibility.

“With this new role, I will no longer serve as the senior economics and finance adviser to the prime minister,” she said.

“I truly appreciate every opportunity given to serve the country to chart a better future for Malaysia.

“I take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation for all the support given to me, be it from the public or civil servants,” she added.

Earlier today, Hassan said he extended invitations to Nurul Izzah and Petronas senior manager Khairil Anuar Ramli to co-head the secretariat.

The secretariat will support the advisory committee which reports directly to Anwar.

Anwar came under heavy criticism from supporters and detractors alike after he announced Nurul Izzah’s appointment as his senior adviser.

Amid accusations of nepotism, Anwar cited Nurul Izzah’s academic background and that she would receive no pay from the position, in defending her appointment.
