PAS today held a demonstration and later filed a police report against Gerakan over an alleged resolution calling for the sacking of Perak Mufti Harussani Zakaria.

Some 100 PAS members and supporters, armed with placards, gathered outside the Kampung Baru mosque after Friday prayers to voice their dissatisfaction this afternoon.

They also chanted ' Hidup Islam ' (long live Islam)and ' Hancur Gerakan ' (Destroy Gerakan).

The hour-long protest was led by PAS Federal Territories acting Youth chief Kamaruzaman Mohamad.

Addressing the crowd with a loud-hailer later, Kamaruzaman and other PAS FT leaders demanded an apology from Gerakan.

"We give them one week to retract the statement," said PAS central exco member Ridzuan Mohd Nor. He added that the apology must be issued in all newspapers.

"We (PAS) will fight to the end to defend Islam. Where are the Umno members, who waved their keris?" said another PAS FT leader Mohamad Nor Mohamad.

Racial disharmony

Later, Kamurzaman, accompanied by several supporters, filed a police report against Gerakan with the Dang Wangi police station for allegedly causing racial disharmony.

PAS leaders have been seeing red over an April 2 report in the Star which said that Gerakan FT had passed a resolution at its convention the day before calling for Harussani's sacking.

It said the Barisan Nasional (BN) component party members wanted Harussani's head to roll over the spreading of a false SMS about a mass baptism for Malays in a church in Perak last year.

However, during a dialogue with PAS FT leaders this morning, Gerakan FT Youth chief Ma Woei Chyi denied that such a resolution was passed.

Kamaruzaman ( photo ) when asked if he had clarified the issue with the Star, replied that he had but was still pressing ahead with the police report.

"I confirmed with the Star reporter who did the story that it was not part of the resolution. However, the proposal (to sack the mufti) by (Gerakan FT chairperson) Dr Tan Kee Kwong is bad and should not be taken lightly," he said.

He said the daily is expected to issue a correction on the matter tomorrow.
