Gerakan wants to contest 30 seats in upcoming state polls

Gerakan is planning to contest 30 state seats in the upcoming state elections.

According to its president Dominic Lau, the party has sorted about 90 percent of its seat selections.

“Gerakan has chosen 30 seats to contest in Kedah, Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan,” Lau, who is also Perikatan Nasional (PN) deputy chairperson, was quoted telling Utusan Malaysia.

He said Gerakan will contest in all but two states where the polls will be held, namely Kelantan and Terengganu, which are helmed by its PN ally PAS.

“PN is still discussing (seat selections) in the two states.

“We (Gerakan) do not mind not contesting in the two states, as what matters is ensuring a PN win in the elections.”

Lau then reiterated the party’s focus will be on Penang, which it sees as a “front state”.

As part of BN, Gerakan held Penang from 1969 to 2008 - when it lost the state to DAP. The party quit BN in 2018, and in February 2021, it joined PN.

The party currently does not hold any parliamentary or state seats.
