PARLIAMENT | Only around 900 out of Rapid Bus’ 1,757 buses are operational, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke also revealed that 45 percent of Rapid Bus vehicles are over 10 years old.
“Rapid Bus conducts maintenance works on all these buses. The number of buses being repaired and the number of buses in service can vary from time to time,” he said.
He said a “fleet replacement and electrification programme” to replace ageing and uneconomical buses with new electric and diesel buses will kick off in 2024.
Loke was answering a question from Wong Shu Qi (Harapan-Kluang) who wanted to know how many of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd’s buses were operating daily.
Prasarana is the owner of Rapid Bus - a company which operates city buses in the Klang Valley, Penang, and Kuantan.
Meanwhile, Loke said Rapid Bus operations were not at optimal levels due to a shortage of drivers.
He said there are 867 vacancies that need to be filled by end-2023.
