Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has kept his word and cleared his 17 traffic summonses totaling RM1,740.

A check with the government-owned information portal rilek.com.my resulted with a "no summonses found" response in place of the full details of his 17 traffic offences committed between March 2006 to April 2007.

The list includes six tickets for speeding.

Last week, the 31-year-old Oxford graduate and son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi thanked malaysiakini for alerting him of the unpaid summonses and promised to settle them.

Driving license expired

However, there still seems to be a problem.

Further checks yesterday revealed that 10 of those offences were committed after his driving license had expired ( see below ).

According to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) official website , Khairy's Class-D driving license had expired on Oct 21 last year.

Section 26 of the Road Transport Act 1987 stipulates that no person shall drive a motor vehicle unless they possess a valid driving license.

The same section specifies that those in violation of the act shall be guilty of an offence and can be compounded of a maximum RM1,000, sentenced to a maximum three-month jail term or both.

When informed of this, Khairy said he was "not sure" if the records on the online portal were true.

"I'm not sure. I will check with JPJ and make sure the matter is resolved. Thanks," said Khairy in a SMS (short message service) reply.

Last year, several cabinet ministers including the prime minister, were found to have numerous outstanding traffic summonses.
