4 cops nabbed for alleged RM10k extortion

Police have detained four personnel who allegedly extorted RM10,000 from a man in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, last month.

According to Kuala Lumpur police chief Allaudeen Abdul Majid, the suspects, aged between 28 and 41, are being probed under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.

“The Kuala Lumpur police’s Integrity and Compliance Department will also probe allegations that police refused to accept a report from the complaint.

“We view the refusal to accept police reports seriously and will take strict action against those who do so,” Allaudeen said in a statement today.

No protection for law-breaking officers

Allaudeen further assured police will not protect anyone, including its officers, if they have broken the law.

“The public is urged to not make speculations that could jeopardise investigations, or cause public nuisance.”

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported the case of the complainant, Danny Goh, who alleged he was stopped by four cops while he was walking to the car park of an apartment complex in Kepong on Dec 23.

Apart from checking his MyKad, Goh claimed the officers also demanded to see his mobile phone.

Since Goh worked in the automotive industry, his phone contained records of customers’ MyKad details and this led the officers to accuse him of being a loan shark.

He was also accused of being involved in illegal gambling when his phone search history revealed gambling websites.

The men then allegedly threatened Goh with court charges and imprisonment when he denied the accusations and demanded him to pay RM10,000 to “settle the matter”, which the former promptly did.

After Goh lodged a report on the matter, the men contacted him, offering to return the sum. They even went to his home to return the money when he refused to agree to a settlement.

To compound the matter, Goh claimed that the Sentul and Dang Wangi district police headquarters refused to accept his report on the matter since he had recovered the RM10,000, and only managed to do so on this third attempt.
