More police reports lodged against Ngeh, 16 in Perak

A total of 16 police reports have been lodged against DAP lawmaker Ngeh Khoo Ham in Perak for suggesting that non-Muslims be appointed to a special committee formed by the federal government to look into syariah law.

Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said all the reports have been forwarded to the Kuantan police in Pahang since the initial complaint was lodged in that district.

“We have opened an inquiry paper concerning the reports (lodged in Perak). There have been 16 so far,” he told reporters in Ipoh, according to Kosmo Online.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the Perak-based politician’s residence was hit by a Molotov cocktail, which led to three vehicles being razed.

Following the incident, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said investigations are being carried out to determine if the attack was related to the Beruas MP’s earlier statement.

No intent to interfere in Islamic affairs

Ngeh, who has apologised for making the suggestion, believes the two are related and added that he forgave those responsible for the attack.

He also accused Perikatan Nasional of twisting his statement to incite fear among the non-Muslim community and instil hatred towards him.

“The fruit of hate is violence. Because they fanned (sentiments) and provoked people to hate me.

“Otherwise, why would someone want to burn my car, my house, while knowing that I am at home, to kill me in my house?” he asked.

On Tuesday, a coalition of Islamic NGOs submitted a memorandum to the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, urging for sterner action to be taken against Ngeh.

On Dec 31, four days after his suggestion, Ngeh apologised and withdrew his statement.

He clarified that it was not his intention to interfere in the management of Islamic affairs and that he had initially thought the government was seeking proposals to amend the Federal Constitution.
