Johor regent wants strict action over socks issue

Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has urged the authorities to take strict action over the sale of socks bearing the word Allah.

The Johor crown prince urged authorities to prevent a repeat of the incident and hoped the latest issue would not jeopardise national harmony.

“The name of Allah is an important holy word for Muslims.

“Regarding the recent issue, I urge the authorities to take firm action on the matter and ensure that an issue like this does not happen again,” Tunku Ismail wrote on his official Facebook page, adding that the issue should not be taken lightly.

“I consider this issue to be serious and hope this matter does not jeopardise national harmony.”

Last week, images of the Miranosock socks bearing the word Allah sold at convenience store chain KK Mart’s Bandar Sunway outlet went viral on social media.

Following the brouhaha, KK Mart apologised to all its customers and the Muslim community in particular.

The chain also assured that immediate steps had been taken to stop the sale of the socks.

‘Will await authorities’ advise’

Police have confirmed they are probing into KK Mart under two sections, namely Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony, disunity, or enmity on religious grounds, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper network facility use or service.

Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for a boycott against KK Mart on the issue if the chain did not post banners apologising over the incident.

However, KK Mart said it would await advice from the authorities before deciding whether to put up apology banners at its outlets.

“We will try to seek advice from the authorities first, as the matter is under investigation,” MalaysiaGazette quoted KK Mart board of directors member Muhammad Haikal Daniel Khairal Abidin as saying when contacted.

He added that KK Mart has received “a lot of calls” pertaining to the issue, but said that none of them were threatening or intimidating in nature.
