Islamic state: We must thank Najib

He is aware that under civil law, felons committing crimes only receive light sentences. It is clear therefore that Najib's ultimate intention in making the declaration was to prevent graft and sexual impropriety among public officials.

On This is an Islamic state: Najib

Ravindran Mailvaganam: We need to look at Najib's declaration that Malaysia is and has always been an Islamic state from this perspective. The DPM is a man of obvious unimpeachable probity and integrity who has never been unfaithful to his wife or soiled his hands with bribes and kickbacks. Now Islam provides severe punishments for both kinds of offences.

Thus for example, if a man commits adultery with, say, a pretty TV announcer at an exclusive chalet in Port Dickson, the punishment would be a hundred lashes of the whip. Or, to take another example, if a public official conspires with the suppliers of jet fighters and submarines to inflate the cost of the armaments to the taxpayer by 70% so that he and his cronies might receive kickbacks of several million ringgit, then according to Surah 5:38, the official may be liable to the gruesome punishment of the amputation of his right hand.

Najib is aware that under civil law, felons committing such crimes only receive light wrist-tapping sentences. It is clear therefore that Najib's ultimate intention in making the declaration was to prevent graft and sexual impropriety among public officials. For this he deserves our thanks.

On Ministry bans Islamic state debate in media

KSN: The deputy prime minister can make uncalled for statements which are contrary to our constitutional provisions, upsetting our people of various religions but the rakyat cannot discuss them?

If that is the case, he should have thought about the implications of his pronouncement on such a sensitive subject before opening his mouth. Is he above the law? The citizens of a democratic country (that is what we are told we are) cannot debate them? Grow up, DPM.

Yee: This has gone beyond belief. The irresponsible DPM can say whatever he wants and then suddenly the 'rakyat' has to shut up. The DPM can taunt and seditiously say whatever to rouse the 'rakyat' and we the 'rakyat' have to shut up. The rakyat must teach him a lesson. He has forgotten who is the boss. It's not him, it's the rakyat!

Najib has to take responsibility for what he said. The rakyat must be allowed to speak and debate on whatever the leaders say.

On PKR has 'evidence' that Najib met Altantuya

Malayamuda: If indeed PKR can produce the photo of Najib with Altantuya, then come the general election, wouldn't it be a beautiful site to see both Khairy and Hishammuddin with one foot in their mouth hopping from one 'ceramah' to another on the other foot?

Hilarious, isn't it? Get the picture, I bet there is a picture.

On Umno: We'll stop asking for Penang CM post

KSN: See folks, how generous and accommodating Umno is! The true spirit of BN muhibbah! But for Gerakan, why be such a shameless beggar?

Give the position to Umno. What difference does it make to you or to the Chinese or to the country at large? Let them have it all. They are taking what they want and everything else anyway.

On Cops 'beat' welder beyond recognition

MSY: Once again, the excuse will be that it's a few bad apples. The police are a force unto themselves and the sooner the IPCMC is implemented the better for the public. The truth is that the police are a bureaucratic monster, corrupt and undisciplined. In this case, Tong's oppressors merely wanted to close the file and it was irrelevant whether he was guilty or not.

Crime is on the rise but our Royal Malaysian Police force is stuck without any ability to re-engineer itself. With 92,000 policemen, it is waste of taxpayers money that only 8,000 are involved directly in public safety and security.

It needs a major overhaul and once again, there's a lack of will.

On Tax rich more give money to lower-end workers

PT Tan: The argument for the rich to be taxed more is ridiculous. So that all will be poor? It is a simplistic argument, asking for improvements in everything except the most important thing in Malaysia a complete transparency of where our tax money goes to and a stoppage of corruption.

Taxing those in the higher income bracket will discourage business and hard work, leading to less job creation and an even lower real wage and take-home pay for the lower income group.

Reducing corruption and a better utilisation of tax money will lead to robust growth and an upward trend in the standard of living for all. Taking money and distributing it to the poor will ultimately make them poorer. That was the communist model.
