SG BAKAP BY-ELECTION | The final week of campaigning in Sungai Bakap will see a focus on Malay fence-sitters according to PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli.

He claimed that while Perikatan Nasional had previously bagged around 75 percent of Malay votes in the seat during last year’s state election, the number has since dropped to 48 percent.

“About 30 percent (of Malay voters), I think more or less are unity government supporters, so we have about 22 percent who are fence-sitters.

“That’s why, in the last one week, it’s very important for our candidate and for the unity government to be able to provide a believable and convincing work plan to address not just national issues but also what matters to the voters here,” he said after a walkabout session in Sungai Bakap, Penang today.

Previously, Rafizi had claimed that PN’s campaign in Sungai Bakap was a lost cause.

This is as PN had become too fixated on national issues at the expense of local problems such as water disparity, fly infestation, dilapidated roads, and other matters that are much closer to the constituents.

The Sungai Bakap state seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent, Nor Zamri Latiff, on May 24 due to inflammation in the abdomen.

The by-election is a straight fight between Pakatan Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin and PN’s Abidin Ismail.

Polling day is on July 6.
