Too costly for govt to build own social media platform - minister

Developing a social media application specifically for Malaysians is not a top priority for Putrajaya at the moment, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

This is because the cost of building a platform is very high, he added.

“The government has many issues to solve. For example, dilapidated schools and clinics.

“However, if there are private companies in Malaysia that wish to develop (such platforms), it is up to them. We do not prohibit (them from doing so).

“They can contact Mosti (Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry) or MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) for assistance,” Fahmi (above) told reporters after attending the ministry’s monthly assembly in Putrajaya today.

During the government’s pro-Palestine rally at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Sunday night, Fahmi said Putrajaya was considering a proposal to develop a social media application specifically for Malaysians.

The government spokesperson reasoned that some social media application providers were profiting off Malaysians but did not ensure the safety of users.

“Last year, Facebook alone earned an estimated US$600 million (RM2.7 billion) in Malaysia, but what have they done to ensure that the condition and use of their platform in Malaysia is safe?" he asked.

“They lack commitment, so we need to study and assess the situation.

“It’s not easy to develop our own social media platform, but some countries have tried. We will look into it,” he added.
