The Terengganu police chief is contradicting himself when explaining why shots were fired when dispersing the crowd at a ceramah on Saturday night, said PAS deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa today.

Speaking to reporters at the party's central headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, he criticised CPO Ayub Yaakob for his lack in consistency.

"One contradicting statement was on the number of shots fired. The first report was one, then it come up to two and today if you read the papers, it was four," he said.

"So which is which? The CPO is contradicting himself it shows that there are things developing there which are really vague. We're monitoring the whole process."

On Sunday, Ayub said constable Azmi Hussein, 29, of the Federal Reserve Unit had fired a shot at the crowd in self-defence when surrounded by 20 men who allegedly threatened and assaulted him.

Today he said the constable fired four shots in trying to protect a group of women and children during the riot on Saturday night.

He also clarified that the shooter was a 25-year-old general duty police officer constable Wan Abdul Aziz, and not Azmi as was previously reported.

PAS member Suwandi Abdul Ghani, 37, was shot in the shoulder while another party member Muhamad Azman Aziz, 21, was shot in the neck.

They have been warded at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Terengganu and Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kelantan, and are reported to be in stable condition.

The police have denied that they had plainclothes officers acting as agent provocateurs to instigated the riot.

However, Nasharudin pointed out that PAS members do not carry arms, and that the shots could not have been fired by any of them.

"There was an overwhelming presence of FRU, police and plainclothes officers... Nobody knew he (Azmi) was a policeman. They only knew he was a policeman when he took out his pistol."

He also speculated that a press photograph - showing a man in a T-shirt, jeans and motorcycle helmet, burning the national flag - could be of a member of the police Special Branch.

Decision soon

On another issue, the party leader said the general election seat allocation talks with PKR should be finalised by the end of this month.

"Both parties are in the process of finalising the allocation. I have not received any latest report as the last time that they met was last week.

"We expect maybe 10-15 days more (to conclude discussions) or maybe end of this month. Then we might have the final decision made by the committee, and it will be verified at the central level," he said.

Nasharudin and other party leaders attended the launch of the party's new 'PAS for All' campaign and logo aimed to widen the opposition party's appeal to all Malaysians.

About 100 people who attended the event were treated to cultural performances and moon cake.
