Razman's prejudiced call for unity unIslamic, says Nik Nazmi

Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria’s prejudiced call for unity - using physical markers as a reference point - does not reflect Islamic teachings, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

This is after Razman on Saturday called for people whose eyes, skin, and blood were like his to unite and send a message to “friends” who supported those who waved China flags.

“What Razman said does not at all reflect Islamic teachings that are not prejudiced to skin colour or race,” Nik Nazmi (above) said in an Instagram post last night.

He cited how Prophet Muhammad chose Bilal bin Rabah - a dark-skinned former slave - as Islam’s first muezzin, which is a person who sounds the call to prayer.

Nik Nazmi then cited a hadith of the Prophet.

“An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white except by piety and good action.”

The PKR vice-president added that not all Malays share the same features as mentioned by Razman.

“If what Razman meant was about Malays, not all Malays have tanned skin and round eyes. Some have slit eyes (mata sepet), white skin, and dark skin.

“So what is the measurement besides fanning the flames of narrow racist sentiments?” he asked.

Razman’s remarks were in response to an incident in Teluk Intan on Thursday where a group of China nationals had waved their country’s flags at a cultural event.

Nik Nazmi accused the Perak PAS chief of ignoring the fact that the group were not Malaysians and was already being investigated.
