The Kuala Lumpur Solid Waste Transfer Station (TSKL 2), equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, opens a new chapter in the country’s solid waste management by becoming a catalyst for a more sustainable and efficient system in the capital.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the opening of TSKL 2 is a strategic step towards revolutionising the country’s solid waste management through the National Solid Waste Management Department (JPSPN).
He said the station has been recognised by The Malaysia Book of Records as the “Largest Solid Waste Transfer Station Equipped with AI System”.
“TSKL 2 is not only a new infrastructure but another of the ministry’s commitments to integrate technology to address the increase in solid waste due to globalisation,” he said at the station’s inauguration ceremony in the capital city today.
According to Nga (above), Kuala Lumpur, which is now among the top 10 most popular cities in the world for tourism, receives an average of 2,495.66 tonnes of waste per day.
TSKL 2, which replaces the old station that had been in operation for over 22 years, is capable of handling waste received through 450 compactors with a capacity of 16 tonnes each.
New waste management projects
Meanwhile, Nga also announced a RM327.5 million allocation to implement various new projects in solid waste management.
The new projects include the construction of new cells, transfer stations, and the safe closure of three solid waste disposal sites in Krubong in Malacca, Pontian (Johor), and Tampin (Negeri Sembilan).
“These sites will be transformed into Lestari Park which aims to provide space for recreational activities and is equipped with attractive landscape elements to promote a healthy lifestyle.
“The construction of Lestari Park in Bandar Tenggara, Kota Tinggi, Johor covering an area of 18.7 acres (7.57 hectares) through this ministry, is expected to be completed by early 2025.
“The park, designed as a stroller garden, is also equipped with landscaping components such as gazebos and pergolas, fences, restrooms, information corners, plazas, walkways, windmills, and friendly for persons with disabilities, is expected to benefit nearly 200,000 people,” he said.
Additionally, Nga said his ministry has begun planning to build 18 Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plants across Malaysia that can generate up to 600 megawatts of renewable energy. The plants are expected to reduce dependence on landfills and utilise waste as a source of energy.
“Such transformation does not only protect the environment but also optimises land use. This is a progressive step that reflects the Madani government’s commitment to beneficial and inclusive development,” he said.
TSKL 2, covering 5.3ha, is capable of identifying, sorting, and processing solid waste automatically. This technology also reduces reliance on manual labour, speeds up the transfer process, and ensures more sustainable and environmentally friendly waste management.
