Warisan president Shafie Apdal has declared that his party will contest as a single entity in the next Sabah state election.

Speaking to reporters last night, Shafie reaffirmed that Warisan will not join pre-election pacts with any coalition.

“We declare that there has never been any discussion or decision to join any party.

“We offer our capabilities; perhaps we do not have much money, but we are the leaders of the people of Sabah here, regardless of race - whether Kadazandusun Murut, Brunei, Kedayan, Bajau - everyone is here,” said the Senallang assemblyperson after a breaking fast event in Tungku, Lahad Datu.

Shafie, who helmed Sabah as the 15th chief minister from May 2018 to September 2020 - in a pact with Pakatan Harapan - expressed confidence that Warisan can emulate the success of past single parties.

Among others, the Semporna MP cited examples of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Jelata Sabah (Berjaya) and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) that led the state from the 1970s to the 1990s, prior to BN.

In the last 16th state election, Warisan Plus - comprising Warisan, DAP and Amanah - contested and won 29 seats, while PKR and Upko contributed another three seats to form the opposition bench in the 73-seat state assembly.

Since then, however, Warisan was hit with a wave of defections to support the incumbent Gabungan Rakyat Sabah administration under Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.
