Lighting the Future: How UNITEN is Redefining Student Experience in the Digital Age

A Legacy of Excellence, A Future of Innovation

Since its founding in 1997, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) has produced over 41,000 graduates, solidifying its status as a pioneer in Malaysia’s higher education landscape. As the institute approaches its 30th anniversary in 2027, the university remains steadfast in its mission to deliver industry-relevant education, reflected in its outstanding 97.1% graduate employability rate in 2024.

Beyond these impressive numbers, UNITEN understands that student success extends beyond academics—it’s about providing a holistic university experience. Recognising the impact of digital transformation, UNITEN has embraced cutting-edge technologies such as AI-powered tools, including ChatGPT and DeepSeek, to enhance student engagement, streamline support services, and create a more intuitive campus experience.

This forward-thinking approach ensures students receive real-time, tailored guidance that evolves with their needs.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ir. Dr. Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari receiving the CXP Best Customer Experience Awards 2024 from Datuk William Ng, Group Publisher / Editor-in-Chief, Business Media International at One World Hotel, Petaling Jaya. This award highlights UNITEN's commitment to providing exceptional service and delivering world-class education.

“As digital disruption and societal shifts reshape how young minds learn, UNITEN is stepping up with a fresh, student-first approach,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. Dr. Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari.

“Our students, primarily from Generation Alpha, require a customised and forward-thinking academic journey. To meet these evolving needs, we launched Project Lumina—a strategic initiative that enhances student experience from pre-enrollment and university life to graduation and alumni engagement.”

Elevating Student-Centric Services with Technology

To translate this vision into action, UNITEN rebranded its Student Affairs Department into the Student Experience and Enrichment Department, reinforcing its commitment to student well-being. More than just a name change, this transformation introduced innovative, student-first services:

  • UNITEN Customer Center (UCC) and Virtual UCC (VUCC): Offering centralised student support, both on-campus and online.

  • iCare and iRecommend Platforms: Designed for students to submit feedback, report issues, and receive timely resolutions—promoting transparency and trust.

  • Strengthened Digital Engagement: Expanded presence on social media and Telegram for quick updates and real-time assistance.

Personalised Learning Paths and Holistic Support
Efficiency, however, is only one part of the equation. Personalisation is equally vital. UNITEN’s Learning Management System (LMS) supports customised learning journeys through academic advisories and tailored subject selection.

Each student is paired with an academic advisor who helps guide their decisions based on performance, interests, and career aspirations.

But UNITEN doesn’t stop at academics. Certified counsellors provide emotional and personal support, ensuring students feel valued and cared for throughout their university journey. This 360-degree support system ensures that no student is left behind.

Beyond core programmes, UNITEN also offers micro-credentials and short courses through its upgraded LMS, giving students opportunities to upskill and stay aligned with industry demands. Flexible learning options, from blended to hybrid formats, are now the norm, facilitated by smart classrooms and a commitment to interactive, in-person engagement.

Global Vision, Local Impact
From its inception, UNITEN’s core mission has been to deliver world-class education in engineering, computing, and business. Today, the university’s reach extends beyond Malaysia, hosting students from over 40 countries and cultivating a global alumni network spanning 73 nations. Strategic partnerships with global universities enable transnational education, offering students the chance to gain international exposure and broaden their horizons.

"There are no clear boundaries in education today. With the introduction of AI and global connectivity, we must expand beyond domestic markets," said Dr. Khairul. "This award serves as a catalyst for us to better brand our university and expand our global reach."

The Road Ahead: Project Lumina
UNITEN is set to launch Lumina 2025-2030, a visionary strategic plan aimed at shaping a transformative student experience. With a strong emphasis on fostering a sense of community and engagement, the initiative seeks to support students from the moment they consider joining UNITEN, throughout their academic journey, and even after they graduate.

Recognising Malaysia’s ageing population and declining birth rate, UNITEN understands that competition for students will be more intense. In response, it is leading the way in delivering a dynamic, tech-driven, and human-centred student experience—one that not only attracts students but empowers them to thrive.

A Recognition of Excellence

UNITEN’s win at the CXP Best Customer Experience Awards 2024—alongside leading corporate giants—reinforces its standing as a university that prioritises student-centric innovation.

The CXP Best Customer Experience Awards is a premier regional program that honors excellence in customer experience, with winners evaluated directly by their customers. Having expanded across 14 markets in the Asia-Pacific region, this accolade places UNITEN among the best in service excellence on an international scale.

“This award affirms that our focus on technology, sustainability, and meaningful engagement isn’t just resonating—it’s redefining industry standards,” said Dr. Khairul Salleh. “It pushes us to keep innovating, exploring new possibilities, and upholding the values that brought us here.”

As the boundaries between traditional and digital education blur, UNITEN’s integration of smart systems, immersive technology, and personal engagement positions it as more than just a university—it is a catalyst for change in higher education. And with Project Lumina on the horizon, UNITEN’s vision for the future shines brighter than ever.
