A Wanita Umno delegate had strong words against the AirAsia uniform for female cabin crew, deeming it an 'embarrassment' to women.

"Legs, knees and thighs are exposed for all to see. This is an embarrassment to women. Something must be done," said Wanita Umno Kubang Kerian chief Zaleha Hussin.

She raised the matter on behalf of Wanita Umno during the debate on a motion on social issues and religion, at the Umno general assembly today.

The debate speech led to an exchange between Zaleha and chairperson Badruddin Amiruldin.

Zaleha: The provocative uniform must be changed to something reflective of Eastern values and which complies with the values of Islam.

Badruddin ( photo ): I think their skirts are too short.

Zaleha : Cloth can be bought.

Badruddin : I think they don't have enough cloth.

Zaleha pressed her point further by relating how the uniform had 'affected' one of her friends, leading Badruddin to pass another cheeky remark.

Zaleha : She said a flight attendant sat in front of her and she could see her legs, thighs and knees. She was so embarrassed!

Badruddin : Did she see the tunnel? [crowd roars with laughter]

According to AFP , AirAsia - whose female flight attendants wear a red jacket, white blouse and above-the-knee red skirt - declined to comment.

Streamline religious schools

During the same debate, an Umno Youth delegate urged the government to place all Sekolah Agama (Islamic schools) under the jurisdiction of the education ministry.

Delegate Abdul Shukor Idrus said some of these schoools in Kelantan are controlled by the PAS-led government and that this has been the major cause of backwardness in the state.

Concurring, Umno Kubang Kerian delegate Annuar Safian accused PAS Kelantan of using Sekolah Agama for political purposes.

"They (PAS) have used the schools to recruit more supporters by placing 'their' teachers there - some are not even qualified based on standards set by the federal government," he claimed.

"Only when such schools are handed over to the federal government under the helm of Umno, can education be of quality in Kelantan."
