Na'im: MCMC, police reports lodged against Tabung Haji sabotage campaign

PARLIAMENT | The government is considering action against individuals behind attempts to incite Tabung Haji (TH) depositors to close their accounts with the religious institution.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Na’im Mokhtar, several such videos have been circulated on social media platforms recently.

This followed a RM5.9 million rebranding exercise by TH, which several quarters had raised issues with, as it was allegedly awarded via direct negotiation to a non-Muslim business venture.

“In the context of what Tampin mentioned just now, I am aware of several videos being circulated online that could affect TH.

“Some had urged Muslims in Malaysia to withdraw their savings from TH. Such a seditious campaign would not do any good to our efforts to defend the institution.

“Therefore, the government is looking into this. Several actions have also been taken, including lodging complaints with the MCMC. Police reports have also been lodged against the seditious videos,” he said during Minister’s Question Time at the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

Na’im was responding to a supplementary question from Isam Isa (BN-Tampin), who raised concerns about the campaign against TH and asked what the government is doing about it.

In his question, Isam cited an incident in 2016 where over 3,900 TH depositors closed their accounts due to a similar campaign.

“I suggest that strong action is taken immediately against individuals who are manipulating and spreading fake news against TH,” he said.

Na’im also told the Dewan Rakyat that agencies such as Al-Hijrah TV station and Ikim radio are also being mobilised to provide explanations about TH to the public.
