85 cases of foreign enforcement presence in M'sian waters logged since 2021

A total of 85 cases of foreign enforcement presence in Malaysian national waters were recorded between 2021 and July this year, said Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) handled such incidents by advising enforcement agencies from neighbouring countries not to encroach on Malaysian waters.

During the same period, five cases of armed robbery and 274 cases related to human trafficking in Malaysian waters were also recorded, he told reporters at the Home Ministry’s “Sua Mesra” programme in Bandar Baharu today.

He said ongoing operations, along with the deployment of sea and air assets, had been effective in curbing maritime security threats.

Saifuddin said the Home Ministry is in the final stages of preparation to chair the Asean Security Ministers’ Meeting in Malacca to be held from Sept 8 to 12.

He said Malaysia, as host, would use the meeting to highlight regional security issues and produce several key commitment outcomes.

“Our focus will be on three areas, namely capacity building, intelligence sharing, and joint operations. These three elements are essential to effectively combat cross-border crime, not only for Malaysia but for Asean as a whole,” he said.
