Muhyiddin to deliberate on Sabah polls seats, candidates: Azmin

Sabah Bersatu has submitted a report for party president Muhyiddin Yassin to deliberate on preparations for the upcoming 17th state polls under the Perikatan Nasional banner, said party secretary-general Azmin Ali.

Speaking during a press conference at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Azmin confirmed preparations, led by Sabah Bersatu chief Ronald Kiandee, include identifying the number of seats to be contested as well as potential candidates.

“Kiandee has been given the mandate to review the target constituencies that the party will contest in the Sabah polls. He has also conveyed Sabah Bersatu’s preparations.

“Not only the constituencies but also the candidates have been submitted to the president, who will decide on them in the near future,” he added.

On the number of targeted seats, Azmin said this would depend on the party’s state leadership.

“That will be left to the Sabah Bersatu leadership.

“I won’t disclose the details here because this will be decided by the president and the state leadership based on ground assessments.

“We will announce Bersatu’s target constituencies at the right time,” he added.

Azmin also confirmed that Bersatu had not entered into any pre-election agreement with other parties in Sabah, pointing out that the state’s political dynamics remain fluid.

“For now, we will contest under the PN name. There has not been any agreement with other parties because the situation in Sabah is very dynamic,” he said.

Azmin acknowledged that most political parties had already decided on their own strategies, citing Warisan’s announcement that it would contest all seats solo.

“After the Sabah polls, we will see how the winning parties can come together to form a stable government that can deliver prosperity and well-being to the people,” he said when quizzed on PN’s stance on a potential post-election pact.

In a recent interview with Malaysiakini, Kiandee, when asked for comments on a post-election pact mooted by Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, said it was not a new phenomenon and had been happening since the 2020 state polls.

He also reiterated that PN would again contest the Sabah election independently, as a four-party coalition of Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party.
