Police, protesters clash at anti-Israel rally outside US embassy

An anti-Israel protest in front of the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur turned chaotic following tensions between the police and participants after the latter blocked entry and exit routes to the building.

The demonstration, organised by an NGO, was held to protest the detention of Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) activists by Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) this morning.

Tensions flickered when police tried to disperse demonstrators who were obstructing traffic.

Some participants also appeared to have been detained for provoking the situation, although it could not be determined if they were taken to a police station.

A protester, only known as Ili Farhana, said two people were arrested following a commotion.

“Two demonstrators got arrested. It is believed they were taken to the Wangsa Maju police station.

“We’re not representing any NGOs or political parties. We are just regular Malaysians who want the atrocities perpetuated in Palestine to stop,” she said, urging the government to ensure the release of GSF activists.

About 40 people turned up for the protest outside the US embassy, gathering around 12pm to demand the release of the activists.

Earlier, at around 7.50am, 17 Malaysians lost contact with the Sumud Nusantara Command Centre (SNCC) after the Israeli navy intercepted their ship.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim strongly condemned Israel’s actions, stressing the ships were only carrying life-saving humanitarian supplies for Palestinians in Gaza.

He pointed out that the action reflected Israel’s disregard not only for the rights of Palestinians but also for the global conscience.
